The MENDEL research project embraces the goal of creating efficient procedures for introducing electro-mobility to public transportation. To reach this goal, optimization methods for the distribution of charging infrastructure, operational planning and deployment are being developed. The test area is the city of Braunschweig with a fleet of electro-busses and the associated charging infrastructure.
As part of these optimization measures, different preliminary goals are being pursued. These include strategic aspects in terms of optimal vehicle deployment planning, tactical aspects such as optimal load management during operation and operative aspects of resource-efficient business management in traffic companies. In this respect, methods are being developed which, during operational preliminary planning, achieve an ideal balance between circulation, infrastructure and traffic control.
The main focus of GEVAS software lies in the development of center-based public transportation priority within the framework of cooperative traffic management. In conjunction with the Intermodal Transport Control System (ITCS), public transport vehicles are registered centrally, located on a map and, based on different optimization criteria, a public transport prioritization command is generated and transported to the traffic light system. The control procedure TRENDS is being enhanced for this cooperative environment and reacts, on the one hand, to requests from the center and provides, on the other hand, information to assist the driver.
